First Women's Car of the Year Award

What an upset to the auto industries idea of what a woman wants. The winner of the first ever Women's Car of the Year award was a Jaguar FX.

The four categories and their respective winners were:

Family Car of the Year: Volvo XC 60
Sports Car of the Year: Audi TTS
Economy Car of the Year: VW Golf diesel
Luxury Car of the Year: Jaguar XF

The idea of the Women's Car of the Year Awards was conceived in November 2008 in response to America's Car of the Year Awards which is comprised of an entirely male panel.

The judges are eight established women motor writers from around the world - apparently finding eight proved a challenge in itself.

I do wonder if the surprising results are partly due to the selection being made by eight women whose job it is drive and write about cars. I'm not disagreeing with their choice of the Jaguar for best luxury car - but I don't know that we're going to see women flocking to dealerships and choosing a luxury as their top pick.
